unique handmade ceramic artwork
I'm a self-taught part-time ceramicist who loves playing with mud because life is too short to have clean fingernails!
I'm based in Aberdeenshire., Scotland and usually have a studio buddy for company, my 13 year old dog, a Xoloitzcuintle.
I hand-build and throw pieces - often quirky, full of colour & detail - capturing people and the natural world, which fascinates me.. I use a variety of types of clay and like to experiment with different construction techniques and surface decoration. Burnishing (polishing clay with pebbles, spoons etc to create a glassy smooth surface) and sgraffito where a design is scratched through one layer to reveal the layer underneath, are two of my favourite techniques..
Since I was little, I've had the urge to create but my love affair with mud, fire & water began with a pottery class in 2004 and, ever since, I've loved this ancient mixture of art, craft, science and a dash of magic.
In 2021, I was cast in, The Great Pottery Throw Down, Season 4. which was an amazing experience and I made firm friends with my fellow potters on the TV show.
Now, I wake up excited, still inspired by the natural world and wondering what I'll make next. Confucius said it best,
'If you enjoy what you do, you'll never work another day in your life.'
Hope you enjoy looking at my 'work' and find something you love.
All the best, Suz
